When I planted my garden, I tilled in some compost, then spread wood chips. Never tilled again. They've slowly broken down, enriching the soil. The lot my garden sits in was dry dirt... now it's LIVING SOIL! What do you use as a ground cover? /garden more

I use anything I can find, but I do like well chipped wood chips all over the place as they solve the weed problem with a thick layer also.

Yup, also retains moisture so you don't have to water as much. Creates padding on the ground so you're not stepping in muddy soil. So many benefits! The point is to imitate nature as much as possible.

There’s always some dead wood of some kind to throw through chipper every year or so! Better than having it taken away if you don’t have the space too keep it somewhere
