I wouldn't say that there's no incentive just because there's no monetary reward. Points in this regard are useful to determine who has been helpful to and active in an ecosystem. Especially in the absence of direct monetary reward for their effort.

Exactly! In marketing, loyalty points system has been used for years and there is a reason why it is still so popular among companies. Not every time there is an huge high-value reward for collecting the points, but it almost always improves retention of customers. Psychology and status are powerful things.
