American political discourse is dominated by vibes, chasing mic-drops moments, celebrity endorsements, and children of presidential or vice presidential candidates. This is mindblowing to outsiders who are used to discussing policies. I lived in countries where people go nuts over politics, but it's rarely this petty, focused so little on political stances.

I’m from the USA but have been living in Europe for 10 years. I was so enraptured by the celebrity of us politics that I didn’t realize how abnormal and backwards it was until I left and found out you’re supposed to either not actually know about your politicians or automatically assume they are corrupt.

I think nothing is wrong with knowing politicians but I'd like to know their policy stances instead of their vibes and charisma.

I wasn’t implying it’s good to not know them, or to suspect them all of corruption haha. But the cult of personality thing is so mystifying to people here. Especially because I feel like you vote more for the party than the individual and I feel like it’s the reverse of that in the USA

How many former entertainment personalities have we made head of the executive branch? Two? That’s two too many. To quote Zappa “Politics is the entertainment division of the military industrial complex.”

Vice versa too. Executive branch to entertainment. See Obama.
