I took a break from alcohol in September and found an unexpected health improvement. Now I don’t want to go back—even though I do miss it. There is social pressure everywhere to drink, but I’m done. I know too many people who lost families, marriages, health and even lives to alcohol. It’s legal, so we don’t talk about it as negatively as we probably should. Might be delicious and fun, but no amount is good for you. If you're a person looking to make any other kind of change in your life, career, relationship, etc, try quitting alcohol and see what else gets better too. No time like a new year to try.

I gave it up in January 2016. I did zero drinks for a year, but nowadays have a drink or 2 a month to celebrate special occasions. Worst decision of my life. I haven't had any fun since. ;)

I gave up drinking years ago. It gets easier to decline. But events that /need/ alcohol to be fun never recover lol

I stopped drinking for long periods in the past and, like you, felt great. About a year ago alcohol ran its course and I couldn’t find a positive reason to continue drinking. I stopped. I will never go back!

Nice advice, I got a junior colleague here in Nigeria. Who is a drunkard. Please advice on how I can help him go through the rehab process.

The fact that people with families and jobs drink, indicates those things aren't that great.

Congrats! You can definitely be social / go out and and not succumb to the pressure! I took a break for 6 months while living in NYC and still kept a highly social life and had a blast. Mostly stuck to carbonated water with lime when partying with friends, or grabbed fancy mocktails whenever I wanted to checkout popular speakeasies. If you can do it in NYC you can do it anywhere else.
