I have a weird idea.

When my kids are out of the house, I'd love to buy a duplex and have a young family live in the second unit.

Maybe they have their first child, or maybe no children yet. Maybe they're a single income household but not by choice. Maybe it's my own kid's family (if they want to live with their parents!).

I don't know if we'd charge rent. If we would, then it would be a sliding scale of sorts so that they could still save and live comfortably.

Whatever the situation, I'd want to own a house I can live in while also helping a young family get started. I want to live independently in my own home without taking away space or opportunity from the next generation.

that's a pretty nice idea tbh, i'm sure that young family would be really grateful for such an opportunity since it's quite hard to find a place nowadays — might share this with my parents when me and my siblings move out.
