i'm assuming the argument here is that choices overwhelm the user. this is true, but there is no rule that "choosing an algorithm" must be complicated, or that it must be forced on the user. twitter allows you to create lists of curated content in separate feeds. that sounds very similar to "choosing an algorithm" to me.
