Imo he’s right that users don’t want to choose their algo That doesn’t mean the user’s ability to choose isn’t extremely important

How about choosing an app that lets you choose an algo? Bluesky promised such a thing in the AT architecture but it never came to be. User-owned storage was the other possibly interesting thing. No more paying for each “like”. A fusion of FC and AT could be interesting territory.

i know that warpcast does a lot of work to make their feeds performant at scale, which i would imagine would be hard to do with third party algorithms i love the idea of user owned storage - it's my favourite part of bluesky's architecture

Performance is a good point, but even so there should be some choice. Not just whatever non-transparent, constantly changing algo is chosen by devs. WC is getting dangerously close to X wrt to showing you what they want to show you not what you want to see, and displaying casts differently depending on the supposedly non-existent PB. I think even file sizes have been nerfed for the plebes. And there isn’t a large enough variety of clients to make “use another client” practical. You’ll just be subject to some other dev’s whims.
