I liked the idea @jesse and @li pitched in one of their blog posts in 2023: 'progressive ownership' tldr: 1. protocol / app reaches PMF and can show sustained revenues 2. the revenue is being shared with power users 3. at TGE, those users can decide to forego the rev share for token issuance (owning > earning) here is the post: https://variant.fund/articles/progressive-ownership-model-application-tokens/

for you to hold something, you should expect to get some value out of your holdings could be as simple as price could go up in the future if that value is unknown, free shit given to people just gets dumped folks who do not have skin in the game of said token, are the worst wallets to distribute airdrops to for example, pengu to some og eth wallet that has no interest in this meme coin nonsense. they will dump right away. you will get distribution alright, but you will also get distributed dumping

Airdrops only "work" (for some definition) when the model is unique/novel. I'd be hesitant to claim that every possible model has already been tried and there's nothing good left out there, but I agree that airdrop-first mentality is bad.

I think most airdrops are terrible AND I think there is some room for positive airdropping. I think the Optimism airdrops were done well, for instance. They basically identified the audience they wanted and gave them a way to join the community. Most communities probably shouldn’t airdrop but it could still be a useful mechanism.

> nothing good comes from handing out exposure for free It’s not really free if the airdrop is actually rewarding proof of work. Projects need to get better at measuring real contributions in their ecosystems. But there’s also the insider info problem, people who know about the airdrop ahead of time can game the system. And if you don’t solve for sybil attacks, the rewards will just get farmed
