Seeing lots of people on Twitter dunk on this new law in Australia preventing children under 16 from using social media. What do you think?

I think it’s a great idea in theory but I’m worried about the execution and enforcement - will all social sites now require KYC?

Sounds like a noble pursuit worth trying in my opinion

The goal posts will move into new services that blur the line, refuse to operate by the AUS rules because they are domiciled elsewhere or will be grass roots as a form of rebellion. It's naive to think they can put the genie back in the bottle and this will do nothing to curb the use just like media piracy and the crackdown on it in the 00s.

They're going to put the onus on the social media sites, yet to see how well that goes... no kid is gonna get in trouble for using tik tok, the idea is more of to shift the national social norms around social media use and it's harms They want the same dynamic as with alcohol; most teenagers start drinking before they're legally allowed to, but 'cos that happens at 16/17 rather than 12/13 that's a huge public health win. There's also a lot of education around responsible drinking and young people generally start experimenting having already been subjected to this. Again, they want this dynamic with social media too
