thank you for writing this. was re-reading Cryptonomicon and was struck by some of the love that first got me into this. I'm skeptical if gas fees are the sole root cause. Another argument may be the speculative incentives quickly overwhelm any long term thinking

Farcaster in its current form is very dependent on fees not being too high. If Ethereum L1 fees go 100x higher, no one new can get a .eth name. If L2 scaling becomes much more mature, new users can join and get names much more easily.

But they are using it to accumulate reputation (measured in terms of followers, likes etc). Incentives don’t need to exist in simplistic monetary terms, it can be complex too
