I don't think that was the main point of this tweet. 

For me the point was that every hardware producer could theoretically add backdoors to their firmware, and we already trust smartphone and computer producers that they won't do it. 

(Ofc the fact that Ledger doesn't make this update opt-in is bad)

I understand why many are upset.
Most if not all hardware has firmware, controlled by hopefully benevolent, trusted, companies. Eyes being opened, including of companies' communication departments.
