Was on Twitter and saw the back and forth between Saltz and Anadol and umm I’m curious to read thoughts about that exchange. From what I could tell, Saltz didn’t like Anadol’s work, they felt like it was unfair to criticize their work without understanding them, Saltz disagreed…some time later they connect.

EYE (I) personally don’t think Anadol needed to get Saltz to see the light. Not everyone is gonna like the work even with context. And I’m not sure if it’s just me, but within web3 art spaces it has FELT like there’s no room for critique nor maturation of digitally native onchain mediums.

So one of my questions is: Should we make space for art critics or at least very opinionated patrons of art? If so, how do we leverage them to elevate all art in the scene?

saltz is a giant ego. of course there is room for critique, but he takes himself way too seriously and talks like it

Exactly. He didn't provide thoughtful critique, he just said (paraphrased) "it's crap". And when people where challenging him to provide more depth, he just copied the same stupid response over and over. I found it very childish.

I can understand the frustration there. Someone with influence that dislikes your work publicly can get weird. I’ll ask a follow up— Have you ever disliked something that you couldn’t put in words other than, “I just don’t like it?” And if so, would you rather be challenged on it or allowed to dislike?

He's an art critic. It's his job to explain his perspective. Example: I'm a biologist. I routinely review scientific papers and grant applications. I can't just say "I don't like it." I have to explain what the issue is, using a fairly structured approach. So yes, I'm in this situation all the time.
