Started a new newsletter on Substack. Seriously considering only using substack for distribution and linking to a site where I control publishing. I know @timdaub.eth does it like this. Trying to figure out the tradeoffs: I want to publish on my own site, but you'll also lose some distro benefits.

I would pay Substack for the ability to have custom domains / URLs I control if I ever wanted to leave the service.

The competition is indeed fierce but they literally take care of everything else. I don’t mind the fee as much as I’d just want to own and manage my data. Can’t have it all in the current state of things.
