I suspect people who say they hate running should try walking for several months before trying running. Unless you're either aerobically gifted or already in good shape, any running speed will spike your heart rate uncomfortably high.

Just like with deadlifts, the risk-reward for running doesn't seem great. I would much rather play tennis or soccer, which is at least social and enjoyable as well, and engages other parts of the body

Huh, I've never heard tennis or soccer described as safer than running. Regardless, what you do for exercise doesn't matter too much as long as you do a lot of it! I like social sports too -- running does have the advantage that you're not bound by sometimes flaky friends for getting a workout in
