Ahh I had no idea web buttons were often that very specific resolution. I tried looking up a history for it but can't find anything. It's oddly specific!

Geocities started the format, or at least their graphic "button" was adopted by users and spread wide, funny how it was a standard in commercial banner rotation networks internationally too. I saw these in Japanese, European and Russian webrings and networks.

Was the first button the one that said the site was hosted on Geocities? That sounds right to me.

the first 88x31 that appears in the internet archive is this one on the netscape site but the archives are spotty and the timeline is hazy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's interesting to find the very first button of this size. I distinctly remember these being used for browsers (Netscape, Firefox), e-mail clients (The Bat), and applets (plug-ins) such one for Shockwave/Flash by Macromedia. I think the format was adopted by all of them from the existing webrings on the web.

i think bc of the layout limitations at the time, everyone just fell in line bc they didn't want things to get too messy on their page (๑>ᴗ<๑)
