Ahh I had no idea web buttons were often that very specific resolution. I tried looking up a history for it but can't find anything. It's oddly specific!

supposedly, it started with netscape ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it might have just been a "there's some empty space to fill there" in the layout. then geocities followed. maybe @pmarca can answer why exactly 88x31 (๑>ᴗ<๑) https://neonaut.neocities.org/cyber/88x31

Geocities started the format, or at least their graphic "button" was adopted by users and spread wide, funny how it was a standard in commercial banner rotation networks internationally too. I saw these in Japanese, European and Russian webrings and networks.
