Sosúa itself isn’t really anything special as a town, but the nature there is beautiful. So why do surfers go there? Well, most of the Atlantic coast of the Dominican Republic is lined with a reef. It protects the shore from big waves and dangerous sea creatures, but it also makes surfing impossible. However, there are a few spots where the reef is missing, and that’s where you get real waves. Sosúa is one of those places.

I’m not a surfer, so I decided to tag along with a group of photographers instead. Plus, they showed up in a huge Toyota Hilux, and my scooter fit perfectly in the truck bed—so I didn’t have to ride it all the way back, hahaha! 😆 But that wasn’t the only reason I joined them. On the way back to Bávaro, they planned to stop by a couple of other interesting places...

After spending a few hours on the beach and watching the sunrise, we tossed my scooter into the truck bed and headed to a place—I don’t remember the name, but I can describe it pretty well.

The island of Hispaniola (or Haiti, depending on who you ask) has a fascinating landscape, full of caves—both above ground and underwater. Picture this: a not-too-dense jungle on mostly flat terrain. You walk around a beautiful bush, and suddenly, you find yourself at the edge of a massive hole in the ground—about 10-15 meters deep and 80-100 meters across. At the bottom? A crystal-clear freshwater lake, bright blue. And that lake? It connects to an underwater cave system stretching for dozens of kilometers!

There are several of these "holes" scattered around, but only two are safe enough to climb down and swim in. Of course, this wasn’t some wild, unmarked spot where people could just fall in by accident. And that’s exactly where we were headed.
