After spending a few hours on the beach and watching the sunrise, we tossed my scooter into the truck bed and headed to a placeāI donāt remember the name, but I can describe it pretty well.
The island of Hispaniola (or Haiti, depending on who you ask) has a fascinating landscape, full of cavesāboth above ground and underwater. Picture this: a not-too-dense jungle on mostly flat terrain. You walk around a beautiful bush, and suddenly, you find yourself at the edge of a massive hole in the groundāabout 10-15 meters deep and 80-100 meters across. At the bottom? A crystal-clear freshwater lake, bright blue. And that lake? It connects to an underwater cave system stretching for dozens of kilometers!
There are several of these "holes" scattered around, but only two are safe enough to climb down and swim in. Of course, this wasnāt some wild, unmarked spot where people could just fall in by accident. And thatās exactly where we were headed. 3 replies
