So, here in Canada the only thing that has kept our economy growing is an unsustainable level of immigration (gross gdp is up, per capita gdp is down). If the US deports a bunch of people, why won’t that crash the economy?

Canada's GDP is just the real estate industry in a trench coat (something like almost half is made up of real estate adjacent industries), the US's GDP is much more diversified. (This is one of the reasons why comparing GDP growth across countries as a metric of success is silly, especially in Canada's case.)

Good take. I can also imagine a scenario where the US government’s spending on deportation costs helps to grow GDP.
