Why is the food in most of the Europe so terrible? And the service with it.

I got so spoiled in California.

Opposite to my experience too. I went to some decent restaurants in the US, but that was the exception, and when you factor in the price it’s often comical 😃 Bologna or San Sebastian are basically food paradise capitals IMO

Touché 😃 I meant SF, LA, NY. Great food was usually by recommendation. May be the same in Europe :)

Although a recent highlight in terms of michelin star quality for a laughable cost for some reason was Warsaw.

Considering that SF has the most michelin stars per capita, hardly possible. NYC also has incredible food almost regardless where you go.

I lived in a lot of the places in Europe and I was with the locals each time. The food is just not good.

Dunno if Michelin stars are a great metric.

1. They only exist in some regions, eg Toronto just got inclusion this year (after dropping the customary onboarding bribe etc)

2. In many regions like SF, it's more of a honeypot for wealthy people rather than people who just love good food/value. :)

Just got to visit Malta which has surprisingly great food from all kinds of cuisines while very European (for better or worse). Went to 3 Michelin star restaurants and 2 of them were worse than random street cafes we went to. 🙃

Coming from Toronto and having lived in the Bay Area for 8+ years, I found SF to have tons of high quality competitive restaurants but comparatively few run by immigrants who just love to cook their traditional foods (Mexican is the exception). Sometimes not caring about competition and just making great food is nice.

Michelin stars usually demark experience. Has much less to do with food than it might seem.

That said, SF has one of the highest qualities of restaurants (although who knows what covid did), because it’s small with excessive competition, access to fresh ingredients and wealthy patrons.
