Okay some process notes while I develop a new approach - lots of artists use something called RTC. It's a really cool and fancy program for modifying the hex of video games WHILE the game is running. Personally, I like more unpredictable and chaotic effects using old indie software called Vinesauce. (1/5)

Vinesauce isn't Mac native tho, so if you're a mac user you have to do some kind of workaround to get it to function. The trick with these things is getting hex modifications that don't make the game fail to load, and then playable enough that you get interesting visuals. If it fails too hard it's just black or you get stuff like this: (2/5)

One trick I tried was to get sprite sheet editors, and then swap in whole arrays of sprites from other games and re-save with approximately the same amount of code so that the game would run. I have bent versions of GI JOE and Shatterhand and a few other NES games. (3/5)

On some of my projects I've found really dense hard failures and used those as independent art pieces - https://foundation.app/collection/inxsblwd - or used them as assets in generative stacking versions that included really wild glitches. (4/5)

I'm currently experimenting with a new approach that tries to engineer interesting color combinations by modding ROMs and creating good savestates to use while cartswapping. I haven't really tried planning out my savestates that well before and just kind of let them surprise me, but this time I'm being more deliberate. (5/5) - if you think all this is cool share with a friend, I want to do something with this maybe later this summer.
