What's insane about it? We are already 1.5C steady state, and gonna hit 2C soon

Why wouldn't you revise targets to 3C or 4C?

The way things look right now, there will be severe consequences no matter what emissions target is hit. Even if we stopped all emissions tomorrow, the gases already in the atmosphere + feedback loops will ensure very bad outcomes. So we should definitely be preparing our society & infrastructure for a 3C or even 4C world.

That being said, "giving up" on any targets at all is just asking for near total human extinction. The difference between 2C, 3C and 4C is literally billions of lives. I think we should be both reducing emissions as much as possible and also preparing for the worst of worst outcomes.

If anyone's still alive at 4C they'll have to rename Earth to New Venus

If we hit 4C the goose is cooked and doesn’t know it yet.
