How do you think this applies to Zora’s change yesterday, coinifying social media posts?

I would not equate usage to quality or even success. Only real winners out of maximizing usage are platforms that earn on trading volumes (Zora, Base, Solana, etc).

Usage is way higher not because of the liquidity but because of how it gets easier and easier to launch these coins. Image + text + hit send and done. The launcher handles the distribution problem for you. Not to mention it's way cheaper computationally to aggregate trading metrics for coins than collectibles.

To be clear I am not anti-coins; they are much more straightforward of a game that we played speculating on NFTs with infinitely more complex mechanics. This is good for all participants.

re: creativity

This is probably the central point to my frustration. Less than 12 months ago Zoras message was "mint your imagination". If this was some random platform that didn't inspire so much culture no one would bat an eye, it would be business as usual. This just feels like toxic air for creators in and out of the space.

There was some good cyclical exchanges of currencies back when NFTs really were popping off. Degens supporting artists. Artists supporting artists. Artists supporting degens.

It was a complex game of hot potato but a lot of ordinary artists got way more patronage than they could have ever done through traditional means.

I probably spent thousands of dollars knowingly buying jpegs I had no intention of reselling, because I liked connecting with the artists as well as the art I was buying. It helped that this was under the guise of "magic internet money" where it didn't feel like a hard expense.

Inversely, I cringe at the 3 $20 prints I bought from local art markets I bought years ago because I never ended up connecting with the pieces. I'm glad I supported local artists but now I have a sense of guilt donating these pieces.

Crypto is all fake but it's very real in different ways!

the same thing could be said about how attention flows on instagram. great artwork can get little attention,  while slop from big accounts gets a lot. i don’t think a crypto mechanic solves that.

The meaningful worth of the photo is completely flattened when it is valued financially, not subjectively. Traders get the most out of optimizing the market whereas creators just become race horses.

And yes a lot of my argument is based on today's dynamics because they're built on an almost decade token standard! If we're talking about a new ERC1155 that's more ERC20 like, I'd be more open minded to imagine what could be possible.

Taking what is being launched at face value, I haven't seen any real signs of progress, just a regression to what pump.fun hyper accelerated last year in hyperfinancializing any thing that may grab attention.

Progress to me would look more like:
- subscription minting, removing the friction of these 24h-to-mint attention games and just directly supporting artists I already (and heuristically) may like
- a giant swap pool to freely exchange one "post" for another, given they're all priced the same at mint
- better surface areas for showcasing and curating collectibles

isn't your example at the end a massive market inefficiency though? my taco is worthless while the art may  have meaningful worth. 

can't we design systems that would help us make this market more accurate and therefore more rewarding for artists?

my pushback on your line of reasoning is that it's indexing on the status quo cultural and market dynamics. 

who else will change the culture and market but us?

I just wish the "experiments" were more experimental and less doing what everyone else is doing.

In the end it’s all just experiments until timing x tech x some other intangible line up, and then everything shifts for good or bad.

I felt compelled to share this relatively scathing perspective *because* of all the quick buy in I was seeing, which felt very odd.

No real innovation, just playing into the current coin launcher trend. Feels totally misaligned from the Zora that stewarded a ton of culture and creators into this scene.

So my best understanding is that Zora is no longer a platfrom per se (ie, for sharing posts & art) but is instead a content exchange, for building liquidity and swapping with other “coins”

I’m still not sure I see the “why this is good” component 🤔 what do you think?

Seems to have seriously increased the complexity required for the average person to understand how it works, which I think cannot be a good thing

As a photographer, I could see switching form sharing “posts” to sharing coins, but that’s distinct from the art, and aligned with the content paradigm 

Micro transactions make sense for the internet, but I’m struggling to see how this fits sustainably
