Ahh I had no idea web buttons were often that very specific resolution. I tried looking up a history for it but can't find anything. It's oddly specific!

supposedly, it started with netscape ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it might have just been a "there's some empty space to fill there" in the layout. then geocities followed. maybe @pmarca can answer why exactly 88x31 (๑>ᴗ<๑) https://neonaut.neocities.org/cyber/88x31

This was like #8 on my google results and I totally ignored it thinking it was just another collection with no context. Shame on me for fading the slime favicon .·°՞(˃ ᗝ ˂)՞°·

i've always been interested in the 88x31s bc it's amazing how it just kind of became an internet standard without much coordination

I always naively assumed it was a standard set way back when, maybe optimized for an AOL interface or something. But seeing it's an emergent unofficial standard is so much cooler. I almost wanna cast in /someone-build to will into existence a linktree but with 88x31 buttons

when i was little, i would think of them as internet business cards – which i guess is what they are really ^-^ (and why did irl business cards land on the size that they are?) i just thought it was cute that websites had these little cards
