Question for my easily distracted kin: how smart are your watches? I sport a $10 Casio watch that does exactly as little as I need it to. Imagining an Apple Watch feels like a nightmare for me but maybe useful for others?

Same, I can’t imagine a real smart watch being good for me. Especially a glowy screen and nightly charging. I use an old low end Garmin to see my HR and stress and sleep and track exercise. Disabled its notifications. Charge once a week. Also have a Casio that I sometimes wear traveling so I don’t have to worry about charging.

Charging once a week is probably the biggest sell over a "real" smart watch! Does the Garmin just give you that info in realtime or does it chart it over time?

Both, though the only metrics I look at on the watch are HR and distance. It syncs to a Garmin app which integrates to things like Strava or health apps. I got it just for extremely slow running but it’s been a good enough regular watch too. It’s akin to a Nokia feature phone rather than a full smartphone.
