still find it minorly irksome that the tech right, for all its many virtues, seems to have no idea how it’s going to enable arts and culture to flourish. you can bellyache about how gothic cathedrals and renaissance sculptures are gorgeous, but like, what’s your actual plan to get us back there?

ideally reclaiming national identity should come with both technological optimism AND strong moral/aesthetic signposts from our artists, who should be exalted as highly as our scientists and entrepreneurs. I see a shameful lack of leadership or influence from the current crop. take back the arts too!

You lost me at "many virtues". All the nonsense about going back to gothic architecture ignores the fact that modern aesthetics are every bit as artistic, but also far more practical and efficient than pretty much anything that came before. We don't need to get back there. We're in a better place now.

I agree there needs to be more, but here's a starting point. https://palladiummag.com/ https://www.monumentallabs.co/ Re: cathedrals and scuptures, the limiter is urban vetocracy. SF, NY, LA have made it effectively illegal to build anything.

Great point, I've been backing away from the digital spaces, art has lost its specialness and I don't want to have to play games or chase carrots.

The tech right hates artists and will never support the arts in any real, open, human way. If humanity wants to support art on a grand societal scale we need to choose a post-capitalist economic and political system.

Maybe the tech world just needs some time to figure out how to support arts and culture in the digital age. Let's hope they come up with some creative solutions soon!
