Low certainty about people + high certainty about facts = bureaucracy High certainty about people + low certainty about facts = protocols

something feels like magic when the protocol is invisible such as sleight of hand tricks or pick up artist schemes. Technology is indistinguishable from magic is the hostile version of civilization advances at the rate of protocolization

A protocol is a complex system apologizing for the messiness of reality

Protocols are about managing the problem and not eliminating the problem eliminating wolves vs managing bears in Yosemite is an example. Only the latter is protocol https://frankchimero.com/blog/2014/only-openings/

the theme of the met gala this year is apparently inspired by the JG Ballard short story Garden of Time, which like most of Ballard's stories has a protocol fiction vibe to it https://cultureinjection.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/ballard-james-graham-the-garden-of-time-1962.pdf

the real zirp phenomenon is people not being interested in lower energy, sustainable things like writing every week or building a company slowly but instead taking a flash in the pan approach to everything from dating to making money. Its like seeing everything as an online argument to be won

two types of writers - ones who figure out what resonates with the audience and then double down on that the rest of their lives - ones who are seeking surprise for themselves in their writing the former has a half life of around 10 years while the latter is really prolific or an inconsistent genius

Riffed on an idea for my newsletter that I've had brewing for a while. The interplay between setting and theme and the potential it creates for good, great, and timeless stories: https://sceneswithsimon.com/p/a-framework-for-good-great-and-timeless

not thinking of shifting (I don’t have a big enough audience to drive direct traffic) but thinking of having a normal blog as well for may be lesser effort writing
