never seen Turrell’s work in person but have always wanted to, especially Roden Crater.

I was initially drawn to it because of the German photographer who shoots most of his installation views, Florian Holzherr. he has a very strict, Germanic style of documenting the work that I found inspiring when I used to work as a high-end photo technician.

part of that style is due to the rigor of shooting with a large format camera, which forces you to compose on a groundglass with an etched grid and then follow a set of actions to make the image: close the lens, set the aperture, cock the shutter, remove the dark slide, release the shutter, and re-insert the dark slide before handing off the film for processing at a lab.

it’s hard to explain but the large format camera always lends a certain quality to the resulting images, a certain distance and objectivity. nowadays we use digital backs instead of sheet film, but the process remains similar.

I used to live a few blocks away, and it’s free to go in there for residents

Was a WFH sanctuary. I could go and sit in there at lunch. And I also even went once at sunset which I highly recommend if you can

Houston gets a bad rap but nice to visit in spring or now. Great museums and probably the best food in the US after NYC
