People fetishize pain because pain is the only kind of proof of your own realness that you can trivially generate without help from others

Narcissism is the delusion that others are more real than you and can be roped into generating proof of your own realness while avoiding pain 

Angst is the realization that others feel no more real than you and there is no pain-free path to feeling real

Absurdism is the realization that this condition is extraordinarily funny

the famous corollary to hurt people hurt people - sometimes people hurt themselves so that they have permission to hurt others
