Wild watching people cheer on the NYPD shutting down my old neighborhood and school to capture some student protestors.

What do you think would be a better course of action given the current situation?

Don’t lock down the entire campus, don’t lock out and threaten to arrest journalists, don’t send 100s of cops. My galaxy brain idea would’ve been to just offer Pass Fail finals to anyone who doesn’t protest. Many wouldn’t protest and disruption minimized.

Protest is not even that disruptive, Columbia campus is huge and people hang out on the lawn at end of semester anyway.

Unfortunately I think it’s escalated beyond hanging out on the lawn The university can’t just allow groups of protestors to break into buildings and barricade themselves inside

Oh no they took over a tiny building barely anyone uses on a huge campus. Better send in hundreds of police with a history of violence to increase safety. Better not let any press film it.

Also the protest escalated because they were already arrested for being on the lawn of their campus.

I don’t think it really matters what kind of building it was, breaking and entering still shouldn’t be allowed Starts with one building and then escalates to multiple and all of a sudden the whole thing is out of control I’m all for a peaceful protest but there has to be a line at some point

I would much rather have protestors I disagree with take over a building or two than the NYPD.

You can also definitely deescalate this without shutting down the neighborhood with an army of cops.

Why should the university or the police be pleading with protestors? Anyone who breaks into a building and barricades themselves inside has lost credibility If people want to protest they should do it right and follow the rules, not see how many rules they can break before the school and city say enough is enough

Ok fundamentally disagree with you about how protest and punishment should work but not going to argue about it. Lower hanging fruit: What about people on campus who aren’t protestors who are being barricaded into buildings? What about freedom of press?

Which buildings? Can you share a link so I can learn more? Definitely anyone not involved should be allowed to evacuate Press should be allowed as well imo (although it is a private university) To be clear I don’t agree with all of the actions that have been taken

Was listening to the radio coverage by the Columbia journalism school last night. There is no official coverage of the incident outside of that besides by the NYPD because as I said journalists and legal observers were not allowed inside.
