Yes! I said this when they announced it... AFAIK they use CF, and CF can resize animated GIFs and even transform to MP4s... I guess they did say "no easy fix" and that could mean "we need time to change our implementation to be more stable, in the meantime we're disabling it"

I noticed they now also added resizing parameters to the images when previously they were animated and original size

not sure if they were resized and animated at any point tho
