I call this idea the "feed marketplace" as opposed to "feed-as-a-service" which is what @openrank and others are doing. 

The challenge building a "choose your algorithm" is that the most interesting feeds are no longer just "algorithms" or fancy SQL queries.

For most users, what they say they want in a feed and what they actually do is a textbook example of stated vs. revealed preference.

I love the sentiment. RSS+ etc. 

But modern consumers want relevant algorithmic feeds that aren’t a simple set of heuristics.

Why not both? Users can have sophisticated algos and get control back- probably will still need trusted curators and good defaults but we have AI now that can trained easily by anyone.

I think the developers (aka apps) will choose the algos for their users in most cases and users will use the default choice of the app

so having ranking services / marketplaces still makes sense where the customer is an app developer but I am not sure about end consumers as customers
