damaged my rotator cuff doing them many years ago, since then have stuck to strict pull-ups

Depending on the damage (lateral vs medial) performing scapular pull-ups will activate rhomboids and pull your shoulder open in an anterior position. This will allow most of the force from any pull-ups to load into your posterior chain and protect your shoulders. (Sorry for the unsolicited advice, professional trait)
