Back in 2021, after speaking with some friends in the blogging community, I wrote a post about why I chose patronage via Buy Me a Coffee as the means of “monetizing” my blog. The arguments I made there about how ads engage in non-consensual tracking forced onto page visitors, and are thus unacceptable, informed everything I’ve written and done since as a “creator” including the various iterations of this article 👇 https://thumbsup.mirror.xyz/u3Ue1hNOb6ifdhzMWChzGyrS5h6u1yzyGwMVw0RHRmw

yes i read that a while ago! i think about this topic a lot re: open internet access. ad-driven anything is just horrible ux. i often think about this from kottke a few years ago: "I call this “unlocking the commons,” and it’s the same approach I’ve taken with my Patreon and newsletter. Fans support the person and the work. But it’s not a transaction, a fee for service. It’s a contribution that benefits everyone. Free-riders aren’t just welcome; free-riding is the point." https://kottke.org/17/12/unlocking-the-commons-or-the-psychoeconomics-of-patronage

Yeah I love the way you said that. It’s exactly what I was getting at too. The art is free, the information, free. Take it. Benefit from it. But if you are thankful it exists and want the person who made it to continue to thrive and even create more, support them.
