"Like most internet users with access to X, Instagram, TikTok, and so forth, I routinely spend two to 22 hours a day competing in a metered popularity contest that rewards, among other things, whoever can deviate the furthest from standard English and still be understood." interesting article about "exformation" and the loss of it in online communication. the author argues that bc of this, we lack shortcuts to recognize the speaker as coming from a certain background. but i feel like this can also be a good thing about the internet as it removes kneejerk biases and prejudices ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2024/06/social-media-american-slang-crisis/678754/

The Atlantic actually has interesting articles, to my surprise. I may subscribe.

yeah i'm also surprised how many interesting things i find on there regularly (⌒_⌒;) even if it's not something i really agree with, it's interesting to read. maybe it's the old timey quality of its editorial direction
