The most reliable way to get attention online is to leverage negative emotions, which are stickier than good ones. But this runs counter to existing in community, which needs etiquette and decorum from all participants to function. And so therein lies the tension

creators are most interesting when well-rounded in being reasonably optimistic and also willing to call a spade a spade when it’s due. uncurbed positivity can ironically be dismal. at worst it sends a message about what the community prioritizes and doesn’t; at best it signals a tendency for risk-avoidance over risk-awareness
