My take on FC’s unspoken etiquette after 20+ months here: - Debate ideas, not people. Never engage in ad hominem attacks. Don’t let your ego take things personally. Everyone must leave feeling smarter, not angrier. - Make a genuine effort to steelman opposing views before replying. Find your own blind spot, even if buried deep. Assume good and sincere intentions in others. - Take this as an experimental lab to get to the truth together, rather than to prove anyone wrong. Treat it as a PvE game, not Squid Games. What else?

I love this list. It unfortunately was not my experience when I first commented on a political post. I was pretty much attacked for my view which shocked me given I felt FC was the way you explained. It took me a while to go back in the channel after that.

think politics is always very emotionally charged because of its nature. for better or worse i tend to stay away from those posts because its difficult to get a nuanced view in without being attacked

By the same token, they are the very casts that require active and collective enforcement of this etiquette. Nobody ever gets emotional talking about the weather Just like free speech doesn’t require much protection if it’s not contentious

i agree, but how do u enforce an etiquette without speaking about it? maybe we should have downvote buttons a la reddit so we can autohide casts that "break the rules"

Then the one responding in a heated manner would likely downvote anyone that disagreed with them.
