I don't think those two things are mutually exclusive, they don't need to be balanced. 

Both Judaism and Islam, for example, have a rich tradition of cross-domain scholarship and education. Some of the foremost scholars of Islam, for example, were philosophers, scientists, mathematicians, and scholars of other religions. 

I think belief in an Absolute Truth, while a journey, is foundational to building a coherent and fulfilling life. 

One should accept that society is plural in its beliefs while aiming to be singular in your own belief system.

This is my non-consensus truth, and the fact that it is non-consensus is a root cause of many of society's problems today.

Do you think absolute truth systems choices should be mostly* focused on the hardened choices (catholic, Judaism, Islam, etc) or are there alternatives? How do you see people finding / managing these alternatives?

I’m riffing off the concept of “absolute truth systems” — and trying to differentiate between systems that have hardened / matured over millennia, and those that have not (assuming they exist?) and considering: is there a choice outside of the mature systems?

I had a dream last night that I was discussing with you and Toby this topic. Two considerations came up. One about the crimes that may be justified through unrelenting absolute truths (the flipside of this being heroic acts). Two about the possibility / need of governing the system through dynamic collective alignment — previously done via priests, and now in part through talk therapy and social media.

This is a great question.  

I think the key is that the system needs to aim to be a holistic and logically  consistent worldview. 

Even if it fails at either of those goals, or it’s not quite mature enough, that needs to be the aim. 

I can’t think of a system that does that outside of traditional, hardened religions
