This is good and intuitive.
When I think of protocols / protocolization, I think of textures and layers instead of machines. They’re like friction or removal of friction.

Two things that come to mind: 

1/ algorithms also feel like “concepts with striations”

what if algorithms are protocols we are held to, not that we act upon? In other words, we have limited agency on “the algorithm” while high(er) agency when we “use a protocol”

I think it’s intuitive for us because we’ve been thinking about it for a long time… not sure how well it tracks for people coming in cold
