Parents spent so much time trying to teach me about saving money, that they completely forgot that community and relationships are built on trade.

It’s interesting to think about how much my parents focused on a specific answer to “what makes a good life” — and I can remember that it included “save money” “work hard” “have faith” “tell the truth” “everything in moderation” “be a good guest” That being said, they focused on safety, and didn’t seem to celebrate about what give flavor to life: stories, trade, courage, serendipity, and the like. I bet if I asked them today, they may say something like: well those come anyway (a partial truth).

Very similar scripts. I really have learned to spend only in my late 30s When I tell them I’m doing something they usually respond with “aren’t you worried…”
