Truly remarkable how despite steady growth Farcaster always gets left out of commentary like this. There is a genuine parallel universe invisibility effect beyond the cryptowall. I don’t think this is a problem to be solved. Rather, it’s a regime boundary to be respected and understood. Just as you think of your insurance spending and regular consumption spending in separate buckets, your social media attention budget has separate buckets. Your financial budget has buckets: Tax, retirement savings (including equity part of mortgage), insurance, emergency liquidity, and consumption. Your attention budget has analogous buckets. Tax = news. Retirement savings = learning. Insurance = Censorship resistant media use. Emergency liquidity = email/slack/zoom other work channels. Consumption = regular infotainment media, including social.

Farcaster is left out, as was Nostr, because many users on other networks are openly contemptuous of crypto-related things and won't "promote" them by acknowledging their existence no matter how popular. Incidentally, "Mastodon" software only has a 500-character limit but the Fediverse, which is the actual social network that Mastodon brand co-opted, has no built-in limit and many compatible servers are quite higher. My server has 20,000 characters. Mastodon itself will happily display posts higher than 500, it just won't let you post your own.

While Bluesky has a character limit ATproto does not. When my nostr notes are viewed in Mastodon they display the full length. It’s a default for posting on Mastodon of 500 characters, not a restriction of the software or ActivityPub.

From 2018 until about a month ago, the developer of Mastodon refused patches to make the character limit configurable, you had to modify the source code and compile it again to change it.
