on Bluesky turning against itself: think you can make a rule that, if majority users of a social platform actively hate crypto, it won't survive crypto is most openly hated tech sector, so crypto discussion = a proxy for an online community's resilience to debate if you can't handle crypto poasting, you're def ngmi

I think it’s more about keeping people that shouldn’t be talking to one another away from eachother than anything else All those same ppl exist on Twitter but the algo keeps them in their bubble Also why it’s miserable to go viral, your content escapes your normal bubble

from what I've seen, the reason bluesky was whipped up into rage was due to a few influencers trying to bait as many people as possible (including the initial trolling). they & their audience aren't using the algo, they're using grassroots "bush telegraph" technique.

That’s a good point too, although also way different thing than not being able to tolerate a diff opinion

oh, I definitely agree with your point, bluesky is very poorly designed for the dialectical. everyone just spends time making hot dogmatic takes, then block & ostracize contrarian pushback as much as possible. unfortunately, all they have is a single bottleneck algo + whatever echo chamber the user wanted before.

You can roll your own algo! But that doesn’t seem to help πŸ₯²

I wish that was normie-compatible. saw a bunch of a "I'm not the developer, but it should be easy to..." and I can see why bluesky can get dragged by such ungrounded sentiment in the long run. maybe the RYOA tooling gets good enough, I'm still hopeful that can be popularized.

there's a feed builder that's fairly popular for those that don't want to roll their own, but most stick to defaults and top feeds
