maybe contrarian: Machiavelli never really ruled. so had no skin in game and wrote an impressive literary piece in exile. Today’s people quote the book as if gospel from the greatest ruler of all time. no sir no, it’s just an intellectual convo and might not be as grounded in reality or heroic as you want

Read up about his life, because somehow I assumed he was a "right hand" of rulers, but seems that you're right! He spent some time in minor politics so was exposed to that world, but definitely no first hand experience.

No this isn’t right. He had a significant role in florentine politics — significant enough that they wanted to exile him! He had major skin in game.
