Keep your confirmation details handy to speed up the process. If not, check the hotel's cancellation policy; you might be able to reschedule directly with them.

Well, usually, if you’re already outside of your free cancellation period - you’re totally dependent on hotel’s decision. If the hotel is popular and has no problem reselling your room - they may fulfil your request, but if a manager has bad mood or there are strict policies - no chance. Just speak to hotel directly, call reservation department, etc.
