If the spiral continues, don’t be surprised when the U.S. slips behind China, Europe, and—just to rub it in—California, as the world’s fourth-largest economy, watching the rest of the country from across a firewall of its own design.

These are fundamentally contradictory fantasies. One is about imperial might and global dominance. The other is about rejecting "foreign" influence and celebrating a mythologized rural Americana. The fundamental bug is trying to run mutually exclusive political processes in parallel while sharing the same memory space.
