Tbh I think all those rules apply more to east bay than to SF

post covid bay area seems alien to me so i'll take your word for it, but also add that it may depend where in east bay someone is.

agree that it wasn't safe for photographers pre covid either, but somehow i felt safe traveling solo with my camera in 2016-2019. 2019 was the first time a local friend handed me a pepper spray and was like PLS KEEP THIS ON YOU AT ALL TIMES. as a woman + photographer + being alone she was amazed i was ok moving around the city. 😅 

the city (& bay area) seems alien now bc ive heard a few too many horror stories from friends and family so i just never took the chance of going to SF alone since 2021.

Depends where in sf too but even the worst parts of sf (16th mission, TL/civic center) are much safer than the worst parts of oakland

2nd this, plenty of places in the east bay that are perfectly fine
