Having participated in dozens of (non-crypto) communities, my personal opinion is ethereum is about average, though definitely a lot better than other crypto. The area with a very large scope for improvement, is in "open discourse" of subjective matters. https://warpcast.com/vitalik.eth/0x7cb27023

Yes! I felt we'd gotten too deep into ultrasound sound money theory and made some threads about it. And the response was: "Stick to technical content because it's harder to change people's philosophy." Which didn’t sound right. It was the same when I argued to admit problems with rollup scaling.

A couple of years ago I was a vocal critic of the ultrasoundmoney meme. That's an example of where I don't think anyone "prevented me from speaking my mind", but also, there was not enough "open discourse" - it was kinda ignored. I feel the same way right now about my last few blog posts about strict global consensus.

Well, I may or may not have described ultrasound money as a cause that's slowly turning into cult (https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/yEjaj7PWacno5EvWa/every-cause-wants-to-be-a-cult). I believe most people ignored it, but at least "cause that can become a cult" may have made an impression on someone.

I'd say it's the opposite, it used to be a cult but isn't really any longer. It was a cult 2022-23, and I called it as such, but it's gradually faded away. I think by now everyone understands almost all of ETH's value comes from monetary premium (same as BTC) https://x.com/apolynya/status/1615214116750389248

Also, I mainly fought against continuing to index on it because it was taking away from the techy side of Ethereum, which was concerning because it starts to look like we're just focused on getting numbers up. "Numbers go up is good", but it doesn't feel like "Ethereum" when 100% of the conversation revolves around it.

What's the ELI5 version of the "ETH is money" theory? I know burning via EIP-1559 and calibrated issuance with PoS is why people think ultrasound money theory is true. I've also seen a lot of argument against it, though--so I'm curious to hear what you think.
