@v in retrospect, do you think that, overall, the decision to go with EdDSA signers was a good one? I get the performance gains argument, but limits how these signatures can be used by smart contracts. Should we move to ECDSA or maybe add support for ECDSA signers?

You can't legally store ECDSA keys in the cloud without a license in the US.

Do I have to read it all? A quick search did not find "ECDSA". :-( Does US regulation actually prohibit specific encryption algorithms from being used in specific ways?

My non-lawyer guess is that if you find yourself in possession of the ECDSA key that happens to control an Ethereum EOA, you are considered to "maintain custody or control of Virtual Currency on behalf of others", and are therefore required to obtain a BitLicense.
