I’m reading The Attention Merchants. Advertising was looked down upon in the same way that web3/blockchain is today in the early 20th century. It took government use of the medium to lend credence to advertising’s potential and remove its stigma.

This is because, much like web3 charlatans, advertising was largely used by the turn of the century patent medicine charlatans (the snake oil sales people).
