I think if the airdrops are used to power the app it could be a cool way to get your first 1,000 users. But it definitely feels like a whole new ball game.

if you're first 1000 users are coming for the promise of financial gain and not to use your product you have no idea whether or not you're reaching your actual audience or not

Absolutely true. But I can't tell you how many meal service things I signed up for because of free food and then canceled ;) Isn't it just the web3 version of that?

nope, because there was no expectation of reward beyond the free meal. you can calculate things like customer acquisition costs and back into what an effect reward is that will still be accretive to the company's value airdrops form communities around speculation, not around the product
